NIT Karnataka, Surathkal is an institute of National Importance as per NITSER Act, 2007 of the Government of India. It is reputed for excellence in education, research, innovation and outreach activities, and is ranked among the top 20 engineering institutes of India (NIRF, 2024).

NITK Surathkal is well-known as the institute with ‘its own’ beach, topped by a lighthouse. The NH- 66 passes between its Eastern and Western campus, connecting it to Udupi in North and Mangalore in South, passing over picturesque rivers and providing a gateway to many tourist hotspots in Western Ghats. The campus itself is lush green even in summer, and home to many birds, including peacocks. It has all basic amenities including hostels, messes, sports complex, student activity centre, health care centre, food court, shops, bank and post office. Academic and research facilities include department labs, R&D Centres of Excellence, Central Research Facility, Central Library, Central Computer Centre, Lecture Hall Complexes, Auditorium, S&T Entrepreneurs’ Park, etc.

The Institute has about 300 faculty members with excellent credentials and experience, supported by about 400 staff members. There are 14 departments offering UG, PG and PhD programs, which attract the brightest students from all over India and a few from other countries. About 7000 students are presently enrolled, and nearly 2000 graduate every year. The Career Development Centre facilitates internships and placements. The Institute has over 40,000 alumni, who have excelled in different fields including academia, industry, public service, defence, media and sports.
